Milk Alternatives at Starbucks

Oat, almond, soy and coconutmilk are available in place of dairy on any drink built with milk. The swap is free of charge at most locations. Each alternative changes the nutrition panel, and the almond and coconut options are themselves tree nut ingredients, so one allergen swap can introduce another.

Toppings are where dairy tends to reappear after a milk swap. Whipped cream is dairy. Most cold foams are built on milk or cream. Several sauces, including the white chocolate mocha sauce and the caramel drizzle, contain dairy. Oat milk on its own does not make a drink dairy free.

How Cross Contact Happens at Starbucks

A single steam wand textures dairy and every alternative milk through the day. Blenders run Frappuccino builds back to back without a full wash between orders. Food warms in a shared oven, and bakery items sit in a shared case. Ice scoops, pitchers and shakers all move between drinks.

None of that is unusual for a high volume cafe, and Starbucks is open about it. What it means in practice is that an ingredient list tells you what was put in a drink deliberately, and it cannot tell you what may have reached it by contact. For a serious allergy that distinction is the whole point.

Where This Data Comes From

Every allergen line and ingredient list on this site is reproduced from what Starbucks publishes for the US menu, covering 243 of the 282 items on the board. Where Starbucks publishes nothing for an item, this site shows nothing rather than guessing.

For a specific item, open its page from the full menu to see the complete ingredient tree including what sits inside each sauce and concentrate. The nutrition facts page covers the calorie and macro side.

Starbucks Allergen FAQ

Does Starbucks publish allergen information?
Starbucks publishes an allergen line for 73 items, mostly across the food menu, and a full ingredient list for 243 items. Both are reproduced on this site. The table below separates the two so you know which is a formal declaration and which is a reading of the ingredients.
Can Starbucks guarantee an allergen free drink?
No, and Starbucks does not claim to. Drinks are made on shared equipment with shared steam wands, blenders and pitchers, and food is warmed in shared ovens. Cross contact is possible on any item, including items with no allergen listed. Anyone with a serious allergy should speak to the barista.
Which Starbucks drinks are dairy free?
Any drink built without milk qualifies, and most milk drinks can be made with oat, almond, soy or coconutmilk instead. Watch the toppings, since whipped cream, most cold foams and several sauces contain dairy even when the base milk has been swapped.
Does Starbucks have gluten free food?
Starbucks does not operate a gluten free kitchen. Some packaged snacks carry no wheat in their ingredient list, but everything is handled in shared cases and warmed in shared ovens. Starbucks does not market any item as safe for coeliac disease.
Do Starbucks drinks contain nuts?
Several do. Almond, pistachio, hazelnut, pecan and coconut appear across the syrup, sauce and milk alternative range. Nut based milks are steamed on the same wands as dairy, so cross contact runs both ways.
How do I check allergens for a specific Starbucks item?
Open that item's page on this site. Each one carries the full ingredient tree as Starbucks publishes it, plus the allergen line where one exists. Start from the full menu or use the search in the header.
