The Starbucks Pink Drink, Explained
The Pink Drink started as a secret menu order, a Strawberry Açaí Refresher made with coconutmilk instead of water, and Starbucks added it to the official board in 2017 after enough customers asked for it by name. It is now one of the most photographed drinks the company sells, and one of the few that regularly outsells the coffee it sits next to on a hot day.
How it tastes
Sweet strawberry up front, a soft creamy body from the coconutmilk, and freeze dried strawberry pieces that go chewy as they soak. It is lighter than it looks: a Grande is 140 calories with 25 grams of sugar and 50 mg of caffeine from green coffee extract, which is about a third of a Grande latte. The Venti climbs to 200 calories and the Trenta to 280, mostly because the sweetened base scales with the cup.
How to order it
It comes as built, and most customers leave it alone. The two common changes are "light ice" for more drink per cup and "no strawberry inclusions" for people who dislike the soft fruit. Adding vanilla sweet cream cold foam on top makes it richer and adds about 70 calories. If you want it caffeine free, ask for it without the green coffee extract; the flavor is unchanged. The Pink Energy Drink is the same build with extra caffeine.
Compared with the other Refreshers
The Strawberry Açaí Refresher is the same base made with water: 90 calories in a Grande, sharper and less filling. The Dragon Drink is the mango dragonfruit version of this recipe at the same 140 calories, and the lemonade versions trade the coconutmilk for a tarter, fizz free lemonade.
Who it is for
It is the cold drink for people who do not want coffee: kids, afternoon breaks, hot weather, anyone avoiding a big caffeine hit. It is dairy free as built. A Grande is $6.05 for pickup at the reference store, twenty cents more than the water based Refresher, which is the price of the coconutmilk.
