Card balance guide

Starbucks Gift Card Balance

Checking a Starbucks Card balance takes about a minute. The right method depends on one thing: is the security code on the back still readable.

This is a guide, not a balance checker. StarbucksMenu has no access to Starbucks accounts or card balances. Use the Starbucks app or starbucks.com to check a real card.

Four Ways to Check a Starbucks Card Balance

1

In the Starbucks app

Needs: Card number and security code

Add the card under payment methods and the balance appears immediately. This is the only method that keeps the balance visible afterwards, and adding the card to the app also protects the funds if the plastic is lost.

2

On the Starbucks website

Needs: Card number and security code

The card balance page on starbucks.com accepts the 16 digit number and the 8 digit code from the back. No account needed for a one off check.

3

At the counter

Needs: The physical card

A barista can scan the card and read the balance. This works when the code on the back has rubbed off, which is the common failure with the other methods.

4

By phone

Needs: Card number and security code

Starbucks customer service can look up a balance over the phone. Slowest route, but it works when a card will not scan and the code is still readable.

Finding the Numbers on the Card

Turn the card over. The 16 digit card number is printed along the back. The 8 digit security code sits under a scratch off strip beside it. Both are needed for any online or in app check, and neither appears on the front of the card.

The scratch strip is the weak point. A fingernail or a key often takes the printed digits away with the strip, and once the code is gone no online method will work. A coin edge with light pressure is the safe approach. If the code is already unreadable, the counter is the only remaining option.

Register the Card Once, Then Stop Worrying

A card added to the Starbucks app takes a minute to set up and changes three things. The balance stays visible without re entering numbers. The funds become recoverable if the plastic is lost or stolen. And payments from that balance earn Stars at the higher rate rather than the counter rate.

An unregistered card has none of that protection. Lost, it is simply gone, in the same way cash is. Registration is the single most useful thing to do with a card you have just been given.

When the Balance Looks Wrong

Pending transactions are the usual explanation. A balance can read low for a short period after an order while the charge settles. Reloads can take a few minutes to appear. If a figure still looks wrong after that, Starbucks customer service can pull the transaction history for a registered card.

This site cannot help with balances, disputes or refunds. For any of that, contact Starbucks directly. What this site can tell you is what your balance will buy: browse the full menu or total an order in the nutrition calculator.

Starbucks Gift Card FAQ

How do I check my Starbucks gift card balance?
Four ways: add it to the Starbucks app, enter the number on the Starbucks website, ask a barista to scan it, or call customer service. The app is the only one that keeps the balance visible afterwards.
Where is the security code on a Starbucks card?
Under the scratch off strip on the back, next to the 16 digit card number. It is 8 digits. Too much pressure is the most common way people destroy it, so use a coin edge lightly.
Do Starbucks gift cards expire?
Starbucks Cards do not expire and carry no inactivity or service fees. A card found in a drawer years later still holds its balance.
Can I check a Starbucks balance without the security code?
Not online or in the app, both of which require it. Take the physical card into a store and a barista can scan it, which is the reliable route when the code is unreadable.
What if my Starbucks card is lost or stolen?
A registered card can be reported and the remaining balance transferred to a new one. An unregistered card cannot, which is the practical argument for adding a card to the app as soon as you receive it.
Can I combine two Starbucks gift cards?
Yes. Add both to the same account and you can transfer one balance onto the other, which consolidates the funds into a single card.
Does a gift card earn Stars?
Paying from a registered Starbucks Card balance earns Stars at the higher rate, which is the same mechanism described on the Rewards page. An unregistered card earns nothing.
