Starbucks Drink Sizes

The names come from Italian. Venti means twenty, which is the hot cup in ounces, and Trenta means thirty. Grande is sixteen, Tall is twelve and Short is eight. The system is more literal than most people assume once you know that Venti refers to the hot cup rather than the iced one.

Two sizes are not printed on most boards. Short, the 8 fl oz hot cup, is available at every store for any hot drink and is the lightest way to order a latte, a mocha or a hot chocolate. Demi is the 3 fl oz espresso cup and only applies to straight shots. On the other end, Trenta is limited to cold brew, iced coffee, iced tea, lemonade and Refreshers, because the cup is too large for a milk drink to hold its texture.

Why the Iced Venti Holds 24 Ounces

A hot Venti is 20 fl oz and an iced Venti is 24. The extra four ounces exist because ice takes up space that liquid would otherwise fill. Without the larger cup, an iced Venti would deliver less drink than a hot one of the same name. It also explains the third shot: an iced Venti latte gets three shots to keep the coffee strength up across more liquid, while a hot Venti latte keeps the same two shots as a Grande.

Espresso Shots by Size

Shot counts do not scale evenly. Lattes, mochas, macchiatos and flat whites carry one shot in Short and Tall, two in Grande and hot Venti, and three in iced Venti. Americanos run one, two, three and four, and shaken espressos run two, three and four from Tall to Venti. That is why an Americano and an Iced Shaken Espresso carry noticeably more caffeine than a latte of the same size.

Syrup Pumps by Size

Flavored drinks follow a pump rule that most customers never see: a Short gets two pumps, a Tall three, a Grande four and a Venti five or six depending on hot or iced. Each pump is roughly 20 calories and 5 g of sugar, so a Venti flavored latte carries about 40 more calories of syrup than a Grande before the extra milk is counted. Asking for "half the pumps" is the single most effective way to lighten any size.
