How Much Caffeine Is in Starbucks Drinks

Caffeine does not track calories, price or how strong a drink tastes. Here is what the published figures actually say.

Cold Brew Carries More Than Espresso Drinks

The result surprises people who assume espresso is the strongest thing on the menu. A shot of espresso carries roughly 75 mg, and a Grande latte built on two shots lands near 150. Cold brew steeps ground coffee in cool water for around 20 hours, which extracts a large amount of caffeine into a drink served without dilution.

Nitro cold brew runs higher still per ounce, because it is served without ice. A drink with ice is part water by volume once the ice melts, and nitro simply is not.

Roast Level Barely Matters

Dark roast tastes stronger and carries slightly less caffeine than blonde roast, because roasting burns caffeine off. The difference is small enough to ignore next to the difference between drink types. Cold brew in place of a latte moves the number far more than a dark roast in place of a blonde one.

Decaf is not zero. A decaf shot still carries a small amount, usually under 15 mg, which matters only for people who are highly sensitive or drinking several late in the day.

Tea and Refreshers Carry Caffeine Too

Matcha and chai both carry real caffeine, and a matcha latte can approach a brewed coffee at the same size. Refreshers use green coffee extract, which is unroasted coffee bean, so a drink that tastes entirely of fruit still delivers a lift.

The genuinely caffeine free options are herbal and mint infusions, steamers, lemonade, hot chocolate at a low level from cocoa, and creme Frappuccino builds without matcha or chai.

How Much Is Too Much

US health guidance puts 400 mg a day as the general ceiling for healthy adults. Pregnancy guidance is lower, usually around 200 mg. Two large cold brews can approach the adult figure on their own before any other source in the day is counted.

The nutrition calculator totals caffeine alongside calories and sugar, which makes a multi drink day easy to check rather than estimate.

How Much Caffeine Is in Starbucks Drinks: Common Questions

Which Starbucks drink has the most caffeine?
Cold brew and nitro cold brew lead per ounce, ahead of espresso drinks and brewed coffee. The table on this page ranks the current menu by published figures.
How much caffeine is in a Grande latte?
A Grande latte is built on two espresso shots, which lands near 150 mg. Because shot count does not scale with cup size on lattes, a Tall carries the same amount.
Does dark roast have more caffeine than blonde roast?
Slightly less. The roast burns caffeine off, so the lighter blonde retains a little more. That difference is small next to the gap between drink types.
Do Starbucks Refreshers have caffeine?
Yes, from green coffee extract, which is unroasted coffee bean. It adds no coffee flavour, so the drink tastes purely of fruit while still carrying caffeine.
Is Starbucks decaf completely caffeine free?
No. A decaf shot usually carries under 15 mg. That is negligible for most people and worth knowing for anyone highly sensitive.
