Starbucks Iced Tea Menu USA

Starbucks iced tea is a shaken drink, not a poured one: tea concentrate, water and ice go into a shaker and come out bright and a little frothy. There are 8 builds here across black, green and Passion Tango bases, plain or with lemonade, and every one of them goes up to the 30 oz Trenta. Prices start at $4.15 at Starbucks (Northgate Way & I-5), Seattle.

This page explains the three bases and what they taste like, why the plain teas are zero calories and the lemonade versions are not, the caffeine in each, the Trenta question, and how to order any of them sweetened or not.

Three Bases, Two Styles

Every iced tea starts with one of three Teavana concentrates. Black is brisk and classic. Green is blended with mint, lemongrass and lemon verbena, so it tastes greener than a plain green tea. Passion Tango is an herbal blend of hibiscus, lemongrass and apple, deep pink, tart and caffeine free. Each comes plain or shaken with lemonade, and the green also comes with peach.

Starbucks stopped sweetening iced tea by default in 2018. The plain teas are unsweetened unless you ask for liquid cane sugar, which is why the Iced Black Tea and Iced Green Tea show 0 calories in a Grande. The lemonade versions are where the sugar is.

Iced Tea Calories by Size

Plain iced teas stay at or near zero from Tall to Trenta. The lemonade builds climb with the cup because the lemonade is a sweetened base; a Trenta Iced Peach Green Tea Lemonade reaches 170 calories.

The Trenta Question

The Trenta is a 30 oz cold cup sold only for iced tea, iced coffee, cold brew and Refreshers. On a plain iced tea it is the best value on the board: $4.95 at the reference store for zero calories and 25 mg of caffeine or more. On a lemonade build it is a large dose of sugar; the Trenta lemonade teas carry about double the Grande figure.

Iced Tea vs Refreshers vs Iced Coffee

A plain iced tea is the lightest cold drink in the store apart from water. A Strawberry Açaí Refresher carries 90 calories and 50 mg of caffeine in a Grande; an Iced Coffee is 5 calories and 185 mg. Iced tea with lemonade lands between water and a Refresher on sugar, and the plain versions sit below all of them.

For caffeine the order is iced coffee, then Refreshers, then black or green iced tea, then Passion Tango at zero.

Is Starbucks Iced Tea Healthy?

The plain teas are about as light as a drink can be: zero calories, zero sugar, a modest dose of caffeine, and the polyphenols that come with black and green tea. The Passion Tango adds hibiscus and no caffeine, which makes it a reasonable evening order. Nothing in the plain builds needs to be avoided, and a Trenta is not a problem the way a Trenta lemonade drink is.

The lemonade versions change the picture. A Grande carries 11 to 18 g of sugar and a Trenta roughly doubles it, so they belong with the Refreshers as sweet drinks rather than with plain tea. Ordering half the lemonade or no added sugar brings them back down.

Ordering Iced Tea Your Way

  • Sweetened: ask for liquid cane sugar; a Grande gets four pumps at about 20 calories each.
  • Half lemonade: any plain tea can be made half tea, half lemonade, which is what the lemonade builds are.
  • Light ice: more tea in the cup, no change to calories on the plain versions.
  • No water: the concentrate is normally cut with water; asking for no water makes it stronger.
  • Add a fruit inclusion or a pump of raspberry or peach syrup for a flavored version.
  • Passion Tango with a splash of lemonade and no sugar is the common low-calorie order.
  • Order it in the app and the tea is shaken to order like any other; iced tea also qualifies for the Rewards refill at the counter when you stay in.

Iced teas declare none declared and contain no dairy, nuts or gluten. They are shaken in the same shakers as Refreshers and shaken espressos.
